Chapter Eighteen

Charlie

You’re exactly who I want to spend my energy on.

Those words drift in and out of my brain as I tap away at a note on my phone.

He’s stuck in every single thought I have. And he shouldn’t be taking up residence. I shouldn’t be thinking about how much he scared the shit out of me when he fell overboard. Twice. How I absentmindedly played with his hands. The way he cupped my face just hours ago when we sailed to shore and he tried to kiss me. I never wanted to be kissed as much as I wanted it right then and there.

And the whole time I was in the shower, I kept thinking how crazy this is. We’re supposed to be working together on this fundraiser. Raising money for kids to go to camp. Not racing each other on sailboats to see what band we’re going to hire. Or tossing darts to see who can decorate. Or hooking up in parking lots. Or driving each other to the point of wanting to get naked.

I’ve tried to keep him at a distance, but that’s going over as well as a goddamn lead balloon. Which is why I’m making the most ridiculous pro and con list known to man:

So far, I have one thing.

• Your brain is a ticking time bomb.

I’ve been staring at this list for the last twenty minutes while in line at the Sheriff’s office. Sophie sent me with a folder filled with every piece of paperwork I could need, from boat licenses, to property tax information, and even their American Camp Association accreditation paperwork to show we require life jackets and have trained lifeguards on duty.

“Next!”

Finally. I shuffle to the desk where an elderly man, who has to be pushing eighty, greets me.

“Hi, I’m from Camp Pine Haven. I was told we needed a permit for fireworks this weekend?”

“This weekend?” His eyes grow wide behind his thick glasses. “That’s in four days. Typically we need two weeks to process permits.”

I smile. “I know. We found out today that our current permits and licenses don’t cover it. I’m hoping we can get something expedited?”

I hand over everything Sophie gave me. He shuffles through the paperwork. One. Document. At. A. Time. Jeez, no wonder it takes weeks to process. This guy moves slower than molasses in January.

He glances up at me. “So, tell me about the fireworks. What’s the reason?”

“My dead sister,” I mutter.

“Sorry?” His bushy white eyebrows knit together.

Forget tabloid gossip. Small-town gossip is a hundred times worse. Now Gramps is going to be on his lunch break and I’ll be the topic of conversation. What do I have to lose? It’s a charity event. Besides, maybe it will tug at his heartstrings, and I’ll get a donation of a police ride-along or something. People love that stuff.

“My sister died a few months ago, and her last wish was for me and my ex-boyfriend to spread her ashes.”

“So you’re shooting her ashes off as fireworks?” He leans back in his chair.
